Below are two more very tiny faces from the class photo of the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1896. E. M. Rice proved too elusive for a quick internet search so we’ll focus on L. R. Worden. L. R. stands for Lucien Robson Worden, I believe. He was born about 1872 to Albert and Annie Robson Worden. We first find him in the 1880 census with mom, dad, brothers Euclid (or Edward), Beverly (a son), and one sister Lucy. Lucy was also listed as 7 years old in 1880, they may have been twins, especially given the closeness of their names.

1880 – the Worden family lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
1890’s – Lucian Worden shows up multiple times in the University of Wisconsin yearbooks on Ancestry.com. There’s another great photo of him 1893 as part of the Varsity Boat Crew.
1900 – Still in Milwaukee, Lucian has moved back in with his parents after school. His is listed as a lawyer, aged 27, born in Illinois. Other documents also point to a birth in Chicago, IL. The other siblings appear be have been born there too. Dad, Albert, was from New York and mom, Annie, from England.
1903 – Lucian married Josephine Dahl in Milwaukee on December 12th.
1905 – A Wisconsin census had Lucian and Josephine living in Milwaukee. He is a lawyer, aged 32, she is 26. They have no children.
1906 – A memorial on Find A Grave puts Annie Robson Worden’s death at 1906.
1910 – Lucian and Josephine were still living, childless, in Milwaukee. Lucian was still practicing law. Father Albert, now a widow, lived with son Beverly and his family.
1912 – A memorial on Find A Grave puts Albert Worden’s death at 1912.
1914 – The 1914 city directory of Milwaukee listed several Wordens. Beverly Worden is Pres-Tres of Worden-Allen Co. Lucian R. Worden has “died Sept 6, 1913.” A short newspaper blurb from the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, Sept 10, 1913, page 6 states,
Lucien R. Worden, for fifteen years a prominent Milwaukee attorney, died at his home in West Allis after a year’s illness with heart trouble. He was forty years old. He graduated from the state university.
His sister Lucy died 4 years later in 1917, aged 44. Without children, it’s unlikely that descendants are searching for Lucian, but I hope this photo, and his wonderful boat crew picture, find good homes.
